VAT on Soft Drinks
Metro Drinks believes it is inappropriate to charge VAT on healthy drinks (eg water and fruit juice) at the same rate (17.5%) as charged on less healthy sugar-sweetened fizzy drinks and drinks which contain harmful additives. The new criteria set out under the Government's Nutritional standards for School Food should be used to positively discriminate in favour of healthy drinks by putting them on the same zero VAT rating as food generally.
We are campaigning on this because we believe this is a better way of dealing with rising levels of obesity among young people.
