Metro Drinks and the Environment
Transporting bottled drinks around the country isn't very 'Green'. On average, it takes 3.3 litres of diesel to deliver 1,000 half litre bottles over 100 miles in an average sized lorry (i.e. 17T). And 3.3 litres of diesel throws 9kg of CO2 into the atmosphere (equal to 2.5kg of carbon). So multiply that by the millions of bottled drinks drunk each year...! Not a pretty number.
At Metro Drinks we try to ensure that everything we do is as 'Green' as can be. Here's how, but there's still more we can do and we're working on it:
- Where possible, we transport our products by rail and sea, rather than by road. This reduces carbon emissions by 42% over a typical 1500km journey from Italy for our bottled mineral water.
- We aim to maximise our vehicle usage to ensure we don't drive around in half empty vehicles
- We offer financial incentives to our customers to order more and less frequently to ensure we minimise the amount of road deliveries.
- We currently run our office on renewable energy - hydro-electric power.
In 2009 we'll be working on further ways of reducing our carbon footprint.
